Abstract

Adoptions of BYODs (Bring Your Own Devices) have been fast growing in modern organizations, which leads to improvement in convenience and productivity. However, these benefits may be short-lived if companies are not aware of the cost of potential legal implications as well as increases in information security vulnerabilities and risks. This paper discusses the legal and privacy-associated issues that organizations may encounter when adopting BYODs. These include legal considerations on issues regarding US privacy laws, comingled data, device ownership, spoliation of evidence, variety of BYODs, cloud services and mobile solutions. It also proposes some recommendations in order to mitigate these types of risks. In addition, this paper introduces the BYOD policy and management practices at Verizon Wireless as an organizational case study for analysis and recommendations on how to mitigate security risks associated with adoptions of BYODs.
