Radiation Therapy in Ependymal Tumors

Abstract

Ependymoma are rare malignant CNS tumors of the WHO grades I–III in children and adults with a tendency to spread within in the CSF. Several genetic subtypes with different clinical behaviors have been discovered. In localized tumors, gross total resection should be achieved. Radiotherapy is an effective adjuvant treatment and can also be used in in-operable cases. Efficacy of chemotherapy is very limited. Prognosis of metastatic and recurrent disease often remains poor.
