Breast Reconstruction with Free Flaps

Abstract

The growth of microsurgical procedures has led to significant advances in breast reconstruction, making these procedures safe, reliable, and reproducible in most medical centers. Free flap reconstruction has been considered by many to be the preferred choice because of the better flap vascularity, broader patient selection, easier insetting of the flap, and decreased donor-site morbidity. The ultimate goal is to reconstruct a symmetrical autologous tissue mound comparable in volume, size, and shape to the opposite breast. Abdominal tissue remains the first choice even if other alternatives are rapidly evolving.
