Abstract

The world’s population is ageing rapidly in all regions and at an unprecedented scale in the 21st century. Like many other fast growing Asian cities, Singapore is projected to become an aged society and may eventually transition to a hyper-aged society. This paper outlines the state of elderly housing in Singapore—its policy, practice and research.

    Basing on the proportion of older population, three types of society may be distinguished: ageing society: 7–14 % of the population are 65 years or older; aged society: 14–21 % of the population are 65 years or older; and hyper-aged society: 21 % or more of the population are 65 years or older. See Coulmas (2007).

  2. 2.

    The figures are calculated from the number of residents in old folks’ homes (DOS 2015, Table 25.7) as a percentage of the total number of Singapore Residents above age 65 (DOS 2015, Table 3.3).
