Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of pharmacotherapy in assisting persons on their personal journey toward obtaining recovery. Medications have been clearly shown to be effective with reduction or elimination of symptoms, which is viewed as an important element of this process for many people. In addition, there is evidence that ongoing treatment with psychotropic medications can improve outcomes, such as time to relapse and hospitalization rates. There are times when care recipients do not have decisional capacity, but as soon as safety allows they must be involved in decisions surrounding appropriate, individualized pharmacotherapy. This chapter reviews the basic tenets of recovery-oriented pharmacotherapy that involve shared decisions about symptom- or diagnosis-specific evidenced-based care and amelioration of possible adverse effects. There are many factors that affect a person’s response and sensitivity to medication including gender, age, race, genetic make-up, and health status, which must be taken into account when making recommendations about management. There are also several, very debilitating adverse effects of psychotropic medications such as movement disorders and metabolic derangements, which can negatively affect a person’s health status and therefore quality of life. All of these issues can serve as barriers to a productive partnership in the development of pharmacological treatment regimens. Finally, these and other impediments must be addressed as people are transitioned from hospitals to fuller lives in the community.
