Abstract
Psychologists have a long history of training and employment in public inpatient psychiatric hospitals, and have made many significant contributions to the treatment of individuals with serious mental illnesses. However, in recent years the presence of psychologists in these facilities has declined. The advent of the recovery model poses new opportunities forĀ and challenges to the delivery of services provided by psychologists in such settings. After a brief description of the individuals served and the public inpatient psychiatric hospital, this chapter reviews the scope of practice for psychologists including assessments, interventions, treatment planning, forensic services, training, consultation, program development, and leadership. The chapter then addresses challenges posed by the recovery model for psychologists working in such facilities including autonomy, choice and coercion, diagnoses and symptom relief, maintenance of hope, implementation of evidence-based practices, and personal safety. Despite some tensions between the recovery model and working in a public inpatient facility, the recovery model is quite consistent with the practice of psychology and can serve as a guide to the delivery of services.
