Abstract
The case is advanced that, despite widespread claims to the contrary, a brain region can be identified that serves as a locus of convergence for vr-conscious experience. Evidence indicates that: (1) the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VL-PFC) is the recipient of convergent input for all components of vr-conscious experience; (2) complete destruction of the left VL-PFC results in loss of vr-conscious experience; and (3) the left VL-PFC is activated during vr-conscious activities. The chapter concludes with a response to the problematic finding that functional brain scans indicate left VL-PFC quiescence during dreams, which are ostensibly vr-conscious. An explanation based on the “Goblot conjecture” is offered, according to which dreams occur only during the process of waking and not throughout the period of REM sleep.
