Abstract

Neottia, Neottianthe, Nephelphyllum, Nervilia and Neuwiedia are discussed in this Chapter. Nervilia plicata is mentioned in some ancient Ayurvedic texts, and it has wide applications in Traditional Indian Medicine. Appreciable amounts of alkaloids, five novel triterpenes and four new methylsterols have been detected in Nervilia plicata. Alkaloids are present in small amounts in some species of Nervilia and in Nephelaphyllum but absent in Neottia. Neuwiedia is a primitive genus and that fact alone should invite phytochemical studies.
