Abstract
This chapter highlights some of the challenges faced today in developing immersive communication systems through the lens of early work on the subject done by Manfred Schroeder and others at Bell Labs. Initial applications were for teleconferencing in business scenarios, but current systems have ambitious goals of educational, medical, and entertainment applications that are as transparent as face-to-face collaboration.
