Thermal Analysis of Barium Chlorate in Presence of Chromium(III) Oxide

Abstract

The thermal decomposition study of intimate mixtures of different molar ratios of barium chlorate monohydrate and chromium(III) oxide was made employing thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, chemical analysis, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. Chromium(III) oxide not only lowers the decomposition temperature of barium chlorate but interacts to give barium Chromate. Upon heating to 513 K, Cr(III) in 8:3 molar ratio is completely oxidized to BaCrO4. Only stoichiometric amount of Cr(III) is oxidized from molar ratios less than 8:3, leaving behind excess chromium(III) oxide.
