Role of Various Sites in Thermoregulatory Thermogenesis

Abstract

The dominant concept during the past 100 years was that in adult mammals skeletal muscle is the site of thermoregulatory heat production. Observations suggesting thermoregulatory heat production by viscera [4, 24, 42] were largely disregarded: the debate centered on the existence of non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) by skeletal muscle. Ultimately NST by skeletal muscle was accepted after cold-induced thermogenesis had been demonstrated in the cold-adapted (C-A) curarized rat [8, 10, 13, 35] and in the denervated hind limb of the dog [9, 30].
