Abstract
As electronic medical records mature and documentation and compliance requirements continue to increase, the inclusion of quality metrics into the daily workflow of patient care is becoming more important. Various EMR vendors can provide products to facilitate the implementation of care paths and adherence measurements into the medical record. Incorporating key metrics and, in some cases, customized quality measures into the outpatient and inpatient medical record serves to increase adherence to these measures and to drive improvement at the enterprise, department, and physician level. The EMR can also be used to better engage patients and families in their healthcare, improve care coordination, and potentially improve population and public health.
