Antibiotics: Intranasal and Systemic for Treatment of Sinusitis in Children

Abstract

This chapter presents an overview regarding the role of antibiotics in pediatric acute and chronic rhinosinusitis based on the current evidence. Although controversial, the use of empiric oral antibiotics is recommended for acute and chronic bacterial rhinosinusitis. Culture-directed therapy is reserved for patients who do not respond to initial treatment. Intravenous antibiotics and intranasal antibiotic irrigations are not currently recommended for routine usage; however, they may be utilized for patients with complications of sinusitis, resistant bacteria, or comorbidities.
