The Expanding Role of Endoscopy in Tissue Acquisition and Therapeutic Interventions for Gastrointestinal and Neuroendocrine Malignancies

Abstract

Since the development of the flexible fiberoptic endoscopy by Basil Hirschowitz and Larry Curtiss in 1958, gastrointestinal endoscopy has developed an established and important role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine malignancies. However, over the last 5 years, there has been a rapid further expansion of its role in several areas of both tissue acquisition and therapeutic intervention related to gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine malignancies. This chapter will focus on several of the important new developments including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided fine needle biopsy, endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection, endoscopic ablative therapies, EUS-guided biliary access, and natural orifice transgastric endoscopic surgery (NOTES).
