Abstract
Remote sensing instruments measure the intensity of electromagnetic radiation emitted, reflected, or transmitted by the target of interest. Instruments that receive natural emitted, transmitted, or reflected radiation from the target are passive; most instruments fall in this category. Instruments that emit a pulse or stream of radiation and measure the echo from the target are active, such as radar and lidar.
