Abstract
• The most common indications for the procedure are localized metastatic liver invasion or primary liver tumor.
• Portal vein embolization is performed in patients undergoing liver resection in whom the residual liver volume will not provide sufficient function (Fig. 41.1).
• This may be because the remaining (usually the left) lobe of the liver is small or because the resection needs to be extensive (extended hepatectomy).
• The intention of embolization is to divert portal venous blood flow from the liver to be resected into the segment that will remain following resection.
