Abstract

Cyberbullying describes repeated aggressive acts using modern communication media to intentionally harm others less powerful than the perpetrator. The present chapter describes the constituting characteristics and common prevalence rates of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying itself is not a disorder, but relevant diagnoses related to cyberbullying perpetration and victimization are discussed and an overview of current and empirically identified risk and protective factors is given focusing mainly on the individual level. Little empirical knowledge is available on intervention and prevention and no approaches have been examined three times or more. However, a number of potentially effective strategies were identified in the pertinent literature and tentative recommendations are made, especially regarding prevention approaches.
