Abstract

Anorexia and the concomitant depletion of host tissue (cachexia) are commonly observed in cancer patients.1 As many as 75% of cancer patients will exhibit anorexia,2 and this was recognized as early as 1930 as a major contributor to death of cancer patients.3 These aspects of cancer present very difficult problems for both the patient and physician in that the aggressive use of various therapies is severely limited in the cachectic patient.4 In addition, the development of anorexia in cancer patients is associated with increased morbidity and mortality.5
