Abstract

Many patients with chronic diseases have insomnia stemming either directly from the symptoms of their illnesses or secondarily from procedures and medications used to treat their illnesses. Pain, fever, pruritus, paresthesias, diarrhea, and coughing are some of the common symptoms that cause insomnia in the chronically ill. Disrupted sleep—wake cycles due to therapeutic maneuvers and administration of medications are common iatrogenic factors leading to insomnia. Furthermore, underlying medical conditions may be exacerbated by sleep, by certain stages of sleep, or by sleeping in the recumbent position, thus contributing to sleep disruption. Furthermore, all insomnias can be complicated by and/or propagated by conditioning factors, even after the primary causes have abated.
