Summary
The vortex method can be used to introduce and disperse chopped fibre of silicon carbide and alumina into aluminium(Al)-copper(Cu) and Al-magnesium(Mg) alloy melts respectively. The melt containing fibre can then be cast into shape by the squeeze-casting process, which results in significant improvements in the mechanical properties of the components produced. The paper describes the fabrication process and the process control measures necessary to ensure casting quality.
