Abstract

The design and functioning characteristics of sprayers and burners resistant to corrosion, erosion, and heat are discussed in some detail. Two sprayers are described, one is made of platinum and the other of pure alumina. The design of two spraying vessels and burner bodies made of Teflon and pure alumina, together with their corresponding water-cooled burner heads made of tantalum and producing premixed acetylene or propane flames burning in air or nitrous oxide, is also presented. The droplet size measurement and distribution of the spray and the efficiency of the sprayers is discussed together with the stability and reproducibility of the flame. The evaluation of the sprayer and burner units in actual analytical measurements of Na, K, Ca, and Mg in complex matrices such as human blood plasma is discussed.
