Bradykininogen Synthesis by Liver

Abstract

Kininogen disappears from peripheral blood after hepatectomy or intoxication with carbon tetrachloride (1), a point that suggests that kininogen is synthesized by the liver. In the present study we have tested this possibility by perfusing the isolated liver with Krebs-Henseleit solution containing 14C-arginine and 14C-proline. The radioactive protein formed by the isolated liver reacts with a specific kininogenase (2) to produce a radioactive peptide indistinguishable from bradykinin. We interpret our data to mean that kininogen is synthesized by the liver.
