Abstract
At the present time there are sufficient data available to allow two rather basic generalizations regarding the humoral immune response of sharks. The first is that sharks can respond with the production of circulating antibodies to a wide variety of antigens and thus are not necessarily primitive in an immunologic sense. The second generalization is that these antibodies belong to an immunoglobulin class whose gross architecture resembles 19S IgM of mammals, i.e. a pentamer of disulfide-linked monomers each composed of 2 μ-like and 2 L chains (reviewed 1, 2, 3). Similar types of studies indicate the presence of a 7S immunoglobulin that resembles a monomer of IgM; no molecules homologous to mammalian IgG have been found in sharks.
