Abstract
The term “elastase” has been used to designate enzyme activity that promotes dissolution, “elastolysis”, of native elastic fibers or elastic lamellae and of the constituent elastic protein itself, irrespective of the state of purity of the substrate. Elastic structures consist of a reversibly extensible protein, elastin, embedded in a complex matrix of proteins, glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans. The associations of elastin with these other substances range from weak electrostatic interactions to stable covalent bonds.
