Abstract
The origins of the use of narcotic substances for medicinal purposes are lost in the mists of the past; so are also their uses for satisfying man’s propensity to evade reality by retreating into the illusions of artificial paradises. Sixteenth Century B.C. sources provide the earliest references to the use of opium medicinal ends.*
