Abstract
The focus of the research described in this book was on developing a stochastic component for natural language understanding and on porting it to different applications, domains and languages. Making reference to well-tuned rule-based implementations enabled the comparison of both methods. Figure 7.1 illustrates the main differences in the development of rule-based and stochastic parsers.
