Abstract

Mast cells (MC) and basophils are morphologically similar, heavily granulated cells of bone marrow origin, basophils being a circulating cell type and MC a numerically minor component of many tissues. Both cells are characterized by their granular content of bioactive amines, enzymes, and other mediators (reviewed in Schwartz and Austen, 1984).
