Abstract

Genistein belongs to isoflavons, a subclass of flavonoids, the large group of polyphenolic compounds widely distributed in plants. A number of studies show a protective effect of flavonoids against cancer, toxic liver injury and cardiovascular diseases1. Being phytoestrogen, genistein has recently generated interest as a potential anticancer and antiatherogenic agent2. Several flavonoids are known as antioxidants and scavengers of free oxygen radicals3.The antiatherogenic effect of isoflavons is associated with inhibition of myeloperoxidase in phagocytic cells producing of hypo-chlorite, a highly reactive chlorinated species4.
