Abstract
Oligosaccharide components are an integral feature of glycoconjugates, and because of their wide spectrum of diversity, are the primary source of structural heterogeneity; which can profoundly affect the tertiary/quaternary structure and thus the overall biological function of the molecule (Varki, 1993; Kobata, 2000). Data generated over the past 17 years clearly indicate that glycosylation changes may significantly alter the biological activity and thus the overall role of a glycoconjugate in relation to the molecular mechanism of disease, for example, IgG and IgA1 agalactosylation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and IgA nephropathy/sLex expression in various diseases including RA (Amore et al., 2001; Galon et al., 1997; Goodarzi et al., 1998; Jorgensen et al., 1998).
