Abstract

When compared to adults, children have more sensitive thermostats, thinner skin, narrower airways, more sensitive gastrointestinal tracts, and a limited repertoire of ways to communicate their symptoms. Add to this the panoply of congenital diseases—both hereditary and environmentally caused—and we can appreciate the special diagnostic challenges often presented when disease occurs in the infant or child.
