Abstract

Many of the fibers discussed in this chapter are used or have been used as brush filling materials, and books about the brush industry are rare. Prior to 1957 only three are known to have been published and all are out of print.(1−3) Insofar as the chemistry of animal fibers is concerned, they are of very limited interest. Some brush filling materials are obtained from furbearing animals, and furs are described in books by Links(4) and Bachrach, (5) both of which provide much background information relating to the furriers’ work; the latter also includes some information on degreasing, dyeing, and bleaching. Frohlich’s(6) account covers all aspects of chemical processing in detail.
