Abstract

Until recently rigorous studies concerning the physiology of relaxin biosynthesis and secretion were impeded by limitations associated with the available relaxin assays. Relaxin bioassays lack the sensitivity required for accurate measurements of the relaxin levels which exist in the peripheral blood of many species during pregnancy. Even with the pig, a species in which substantial quantities of relaxin are released by the ovaries during late pregnancy, determination of relaxin levels in ovarian venous blood by mouse interpubic ligament bioassay necessitates the concentration of relatively large volumes of plasma in order to attain the limits of assay sensitivity (Belt et al. 1971). The relative insensitivity of bioassays makes it impossible to use them for the measurement of relaxin levels in small samplings of blood taken at frequent intervals from animals. The opportunity to develop more sensitive and precise relaxin assays became available with the advent of the radioimmunoassay in the 1960’s.
