Summary

A computer model of a combined ultrafiltration and activated sludge wastewater treatment system has been developed following a study of the factors affecting ultrafiltration flux. The results of experiments show that the major resistance to flux is provided by the suspended solids, and that ageing of the gel is important. Correlations are developed for the variation of flux with solids concentration and time.

The combined computer model successfully predicts the changes in flux for conditions of increasing or steady state solids content, but underestimates the flux recovery obtained at low feed conditions.
