Abstract

This chapter deals with phases, phase diagrams and phase transitions in chemisorption systems. Chemisorbed phases are phases in which the bonding energy Eo of the adsorbate to the substrate is higher than about 1eV per atom or molecule. The lateral adsorbate-adsorbate interaction energy Eaa is usually more than an order of magnitude smaller. Therefore, phase transitions within the layer which are determined to a large extent by Eaa can be studied conveniently over a wide temperature range without loss of material to the environment. A phase transition is defined here as a discontinuous or continuous change of the pair correlation function as evidenced, for example, by changes of the long range order (“structure”) or of quantities which are sensitive to the short range order. Only transitions in the adsorbate alone or in the adsorbate and the topmost layer of the substrate are considered here. Transitions in which an exchange with the bulk of the substrate occurs will be excluded as well as transitions from 2- to 3-dimensional phases.
