Abstract
In August 1967 Jocelyn Bell and Antony Hewish detected pulses of radio emission from the constellation of Vulpecula during a comprehensive investigation of extragalactic radio sources. The pulses repeated every 1.337 s. Their announcement of this pulsating radio source, or pulsar, in early 1968 opened a new window for studying the end products of stars (Hewish et al. 1968). This pulsar was first named CP1919: CP for Cambridge Pulsar and 1919 for the hours and minutes of its right ascension. Pulsars are now uniformly named: a prefix of PSR followed by their 1950 coordinates in right ascension and declination. In dense parts of the sky, the full IAU source designation, which includes tenths of degrees of declination, is used. In this chapter the PSR prefix is dropped for brevity.
