Abstract
Vortex motion in three-dimensional space differs from vortex motion in two dimensions in several ways; the most important result from vortex stretching and the consequent non-conservation of vorticity and enstrophy. In this chapter we discuss the salient qualitative aspects of vortex stretching, in preparation for the statistical description in Chapter 7.
