A compartment on the ribosome; at the beginning of the translation process the first codon, Met or fMet lands at the P site and the next amino acid is delivered to the A site. Then the elongation of the peptide chain proceeds. The decoding site of the 16S ribosomal RNA has the universally conserved |A1492 and |A1493 nucleotides as the location.
