Abstract

In this chapter we turn from the devices the computer controls to the computer itself. We can regard it as composed of the following parts:

  • The central processor

  • The main memory

  • The disk memory

  • The removable storage

We will give some idea of the contribution each part makes to the performance of the system and then discuss the difference between having a separate computer for each workstation and sharing one computer between several workstations.
