Abstract

The debate within social work education about the DSW (Diploma in Social Work) and the Certificate in Social Care has a ring of familiarity to those who have followed the arguments in social work stretching over the last four decades. History may have its lessons for future generations, but this presupposes an ability and readiness to learn from past mistakes — and that is not always evident from the tenor and content of some of the arguments surrounding the future direction of education and training for social work. The use of education and training as related but separate concepts is deliberate, for that has been and remains the battleground for conflicting views about course content, values and course organisation.
