Abstract
Neither the effects of the Great Depression on the Mexican economy nor the latter’s general performance during the 1930s have been clearly established in the literature. Perhaps one of the few agreements in the historiography of this period is that the structure of the economy suffered a fundamental change and that the basis was laid for postwar development.
The basic ideas of this chapter were taken from parts of my doctoral dissertation. I am deeply indebted to Carlos Diaz Alejandro, Albert Fishlow, Leopoldo Solís and to the participants of the two conferences on the ‘Effects of the Great Depression on Latin America’. Naturally, they are not responsible for any remaining errors that may have survived their comments.
