Abstract

In a conference held at the British Embassy in Washington, at the beginning of the ’60s, the then Labour Party Director of the freshly-conceived Ministry for Technology of the United Kingdom, Tony Wedgewood Benn, provocatively advanced the proposition that Her Majesty’s British Government should name ambassadors to the main multinational firms, arguing that their combined gross product was superior in size — and therefore of greater interest to British policy — than that of the many small countries with which England normally maintained diplomatic relations (1).
