Abstract

Intervention by the state in the development of the rural economy in India is an important factor in the prevailing processes of rural change. The purpose of this chapter is to bring together a number of observations obtained during the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) field investigations in the Karnataka villages. Intervention by the state seems to set in motion a series of initially modest modifications in the relationships among the different strata forming the village community and the extent to which these strata are outward oriented in their economic activities.
