Abstract

Bronchial asthma is characterized physiologically by increased airways reactivity to specific and non-specific stimulation and pathologically by endobronchial inflammation. The inflammatory response in and around the airways results from the release of preformed and newly generated mast cell-associated mediators with the recruitment of secondary effector cells such as eosinophils, neutrophils and monocytes into the area of inflammation.
