Abstract
Readers can perhaps most easily discover the strengths of Yeats on Yeats by beginning at the back of the book, where Edward Callan prints twenty letters by publishers and Yeats’s literary agent, written between 1935 and 1953 about arrangements by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, for a never-published American edition de luxe of Yeats’s works. These letters, which Callan found during his research for this Dolmen Press “New Yeats Papers” volume, complement the letters printed in a carefully documented discussion provided by Phillip Marcus, Warwick Gould, and Michael Sidnell, in the introduction to their recent variorum edition of The Secret Rose, about Macmillan’s nearly simultaneous plans for an English edition de luxe. Similarly, the narratives, by Callan of the American and by Marcus, Gould, and Sidnell of the English plans, usefully amplify one another.
