Abstract

At the time of her death Jane Austen had written more than eleven chapters of a work now entitled1 ‘Sanditon’. But her last completed novel is the two-volume Persuasion. Cassandra’s Memorandum and Jane Austen’s own note show that it was begun on 8 August 1815.2 She had completed a first draft and then some significant revision by 6 August 1816.3 In July of the next year she died. The novel was published posthumously in the same volume as Northanger Abbey.
