Abstract

Northanger Abbey was not published until 1818, after Jane Austen’s death; but it is probably’ the earliest of her novels. Its history during her lifetime is obscure and puzzling. Only by tracing out the details can we get some idea of when Jane Austen’s career as a novelist actually began; and of where Northanger Abbey belongs in the course of her development.
