Baboon Model for Endometriosis

Endometriosis is an important benign gynecological condition, pathologically defined by the ectopic presence of both endometrial glands and stroma, and clinically associated with pelvic pain and infertility. Although published descriptions of endometriosis have been available for many years, our current knowledge of pathogenesis, pathophysiology of related infertility, and spontaneous evolution is still limited. Furthermore, the diagnosis can still only be made by invasive tests (laparoscopy), and treatment either temporarily suppresses the disease (medical approach) or temporarily removes the disease (surgical excision). Recurrences of endometriosis after the cessation of medical treatment or after surgery are common, especially in cases of moderate-to-severe endometriosis.
