Studies of baboons have made significant contributions to our understanding of both human and nonhuman primate ontogeny (Snow and Vice, 1965; Snow, 1967; Glassman et al., 1984; Coelho, 1985; Mahaney et al., 1993a, b; Crawford et al., 1997). These analyses established a firm baseline from which to evaluate key growth parameters, most importantly, body mass. More recent advances identify unresolved questions regarding both human and nonhuman primate ontogeny that can only be addressed with new data and approaches (Leigh, 2001; Leigh and Bernstein, 2006).
