Abstract
This paper is part of a wider report prepared for the ESPRIT III project #6942 (PEPS) by HiPerCom Consultants and the Computer Science Department, University of Warwick. The report identifies and describes the current framework and classifications of Parallel Operating Systems and message passing tools used by Distributed Memory Parallel Processor Systems. It then assesses the impact on efficiency caused by overheads of identified Operating Systems and parallel programming paradigms.
