Abstract

A number of studies of the incidence of close quasar-galaxy associations have produced preliminary results. The results are in apparent disagreement but the samples are still small and there are significant differences in the observational data and the analysis methodologies. Results of recent investigations are reviewed briefly prior to a discussion of some of the differences in the type of data and analyses. A description of the search for quasar-galaxy associations in the 1000 quasars of the Large, Bright QSO Survey is presented. An estimate of the incidence of quasar-galaxy associations from the full survey is not yet available but a substantial programme of spectroscopy of the faint companions to the quasars has been completed. The spectra of the companion galaxies demonstrate that for the brighter galaxies, magnitudes m B J, ≤ 21.5, the objects are foreground and do not lie at the same redshifts as the quasars.
